Mr Bede Payne |

University of Wollongong
CEO & Executive Director, AustCham Shanghai

Shanghai based

Bede Payne believes that people are at the heart of all international engagement – be it social, cultural, or commercial exchange. Fostering people-to-people relationships creates underlying resilience to international trade and investment – something that is still critical for global peace and prosperity. In recent roles, Bede has worked hard to ensure the relationships between people in China-Australian trade and investment remain robust through an increasingly difficult period.
Bede has worked as a campaign director, advisor, and consultant across industries as diverse as infrastructure, media, and trade and investment. Bede has degrees in Creative Arts and Commerce from the University of Wollongong and a Masters of Arts (China Studies) with distinction from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou. Bede wrote his masters dissertation on the Chinese railway export industry and the evolution of related commercial practices.
Bede is particularly proud of the work he has done coordinating support for Chinese Students unable to travel to Australia to study because of Covid restrictions. This has included playing key roles, with partners, to deliver study hubs, pitch bootcamps, internship programs, and graduation celebrations – all acknowledging that Chinese Alumni will be the future leaders of Australia-China trade and investment.

University of Technology Sydney
Founder /Director, Red Gate Gallery

Beijing

Brian Wallace has lived in Beijing since 1986 where he studied Chinese language at Renmin University and Chinese art history at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He has been actively involved in the development of contemporary Chinese art and the promotion of exchanges between China and Australia. In 1991, he founded the now legendary Red Gate Gallery in the historic Dongbianmen Tower, representing numerous young Chinese artists. Many of these were destined to become major artists of their time, playing leading roles in arts institutions and influencing generations to come.

In 2001, Red Gate established its International Artists-in-Residence Program paving the way for many Australian artists to work in studios in Beijing where they had the opportunity and space to negotiate a new culture while researching, exploring and developing person-to-person relationships with Chinese and other international artists. These long-term residencies allowed each artist their own time to assess their current art practice, experiment and to develop new directions. The Residency created many formal exchanges with other international residencies including Australia’s Bundanon and BigCi.

The historical legacy of Red Gate was celebrated this summer with its 30th Anniversary Memory Wall Project which documented the role of the gallery in contemporary Chinese art history. This unique documentation is now being digitised for prosperity by the Songzhuang Art Museum.
