Austrade Australia China Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
This award recognises alumni who have demonstrated their entrepreneurial and/or innovative abilities in any industry sector.
Nominees can be the owner of, partner in, or investor in an innovative and forward-looking company, or they may have implemented successful entrepreneurial programs in a large company. All nominees should be able to show their creativity, resourcefulness and sustainability, as well as how their work has benefitted wider society.
|Mr Joe Zou | 邹均 先生

Joe Zou is a PhD of Computer Science graduated from Macquarie University, MBA of Macquarie Graduate School of Management. He is the CEO of GRGBanking Blockchain Express. He also hold the position of the director of Fintech Committee of Guangdong Digital Finance Association, as well as the position of the director of Blockchain Expert Committee of Electronic Information Association of Guangdong. He was the 2015 Australia China Alumni ICT and Media Award winner, 2016 IEEE ICWS Best PhD Student Paper Award winner. Joe’s PhD thesis was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Commendation for Academic Excellence in Macquarie University. Joe is a subject matter expert appointed by the Zhong-Guancun Blockchain Industry Alliance. He is also the main author of the first Blockchain technical book in China: “Blockchain Technical Guide”。He has participated in over ten editorial boards, translated or published over ten books in the areas of cloud computing and blockchain technology. In 2018, Joe’s consensus paper was accepted by the top international journal “IEEE Transaction on Service Computing”. In 2019, under Joe’s leadership, GRGBanking Blockchain Express has been awarded “the top ten innovative blockchain company” by China Enterprise Newspaper. In 2020, Deloitte China has awarded the “Tomorrow’s Enterprise Star of Guangzhou” to the company. Also KPMG China has included GRGBanking Blockchain Express in the list of the leading double-50 fintech companies in China in 2020. In the meantime, GRGBanking Blockchain Express has been awarded as the selected brand in the “Brand Power Advanced Project” by the Guangdong Brand Building Association.

Sophie Yao is a well-recognized entrepreneur as the Managing Director of Pegasus Tech Ventures (China). She has more than 11 years of experience in investment, corporate management, and open innovation at Fortune 500 companies such as Intel and Microsoft.
Sophie specializes in global investment with a focus of cutting-edge technologies such AI and robotics. She has invested in over 30 startups worldwide including SpaceX, Robinhood, Tamr, and Osaro.
Three years ago, Sophie Yao started the Pegasus Tech Venture’s business in China, with the goal of letting innovation go beyond boundaries, she has built a strong team of 30 to provide funding and incubation services to help the global startups to grow and expand. Her team has successfully helped 40+ international startups to land and grow business in China, and incubated over 300+ up-and-rising tech startups. Also, Pegasus Tech Ventures China has held five Startup World Cup (one of the largest startup events worldwide) Regionals in Chengdu, Xian, Beijing, and Hongkong respectively, with 1000+ participating startups, two thirds which get funded after the events. She has been invited as guest speaker at many gender equality events like UN Women Conference, China Female Leadership Summit, and International Woman Day Event by Australia Consulate. She has also worked with many start-up communities and Consulate such as the Austrade Launchpad to help international companies enter the Chinese market and promote Sino-Australian exchanges.

Graduated from UNSW, I joined AEGON-CNOOC Life Insurance as Investment Director. Five years later, I joined in AEGON-Industrial Fund Management Company as Deputy General Manager & CIO. AUM of the company increase from RMB 30 billion to 300 billion in 8 years, and also become one of best performance companies in China mutual fund industry.
In 2017, together with other three partners, we established Trust Mutual Life Insurance (TML). It is the first and only Mutual Life Insurance Company in China. The registered capital is RMB 1 billion. Its shareholders include Alibaba and 7 other companies. My role is CIO. The company begin to make profit in 3 years, which break local record (life insurance usually need 7 years before making profit). The investment performance of TML is much better than peer companies, which directly contribute to bottom line.
I am also the mentor of CEIBS, Central University of Finance & Economics, Shanghai University of Finance & Economics.

Hazel has helped over 100 Australian brands, homegrown and multinational groups develop and implement strategies that enabled them to launch and flourish in the Asian market. Hazel has co-led Brand Catalyser’s foray into the Chinese market in Australia, New Zealand, and China, now going further north into Southeast Asian markets like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and more.

Jonathan is a passionate entrepreneur, business builder and connector with a particular focus on businesses and leadership in Australia & China. His family escaped Nazi Germany in World War II and lived in the “Shanghai Ghetto”, inspiring Jonathan’s commitment to Australia and China. Jonathan’s core focus is empowering Australian and Chinese families and investors to make better decisions for generations.
Jonathan is fluent in Mandarin (written, reading and spoken), and passed the highest level of Mandarin Fluency (HSK6) in 2014 after private and self-study, in what Global Times recognised as the “quickest and most impressive intensive study achievement by a Westerner”.
Jonathan founded Belz Family & Associates (BFA) in 2019, with a vision for the business to become a leader in the Australia/China investment world. 2015, Joined Daimler, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Powertrain in Greater China.
2017, Founded Knight NEV Co., Ltd., an electric logistic vehicle operation company, providing customized EV for logistic companies. Discussed how to develop the infrastructure for EV market in Australia.
2019, Founded Matrix Mobility Co., Ltd., providing EV charging platform to OEMs and customers.
2020, Founded Panasonic NavInfo Mobility Co., Ltd., providing online battery analysis for EVs.
2021, Joined Plus, a new challenging business – Autonomous Driving of commercial vehicle, making logistic more safe, more efficient. Keeps communication to develop autonomous driving vehicle in Australia
In a word, not the end but a new starting point, William will continuously give his effort to enhance China-Australia relationship.
|Mr Jeffrey Chan | 陈家辉 先生

My early career in China finance started with Hutchison Whampoa China in 1992. I spearheaded financing of China projects including JV with P&G, oil companies and infrastructure highways and bridge. Some of the projects later became separately listed as Cheung Kong Infrastructure Group.
When I worked for Royal Dutch Shell in the 1990s we set up different joint ventures in China which helped built energy infrastructure, e.g., highway fuel stations, oil/gas depots, LPG tanks for industrial zones, bitumen for highways, etc. These laid foundation for the industrial and manufacturing boom in China.
In 2000s I was Regional Finance Director of Triumph International Lingerie, with design, production and sales operations in different parts of the world, including two factories in China. These helped less developed cities, e.g., Yancheng, to prosper and sustain in industrial development. I was then promoted to manage the extended Asia region.
With digital transformation, I have since 2017 started my own shared resources virtual financial service company. I became CFO for some international companies and have a team of finance professionals serving businesses, NGOs and professional firms. We provide finance function in China, Hong Kong and Australia on shared resources basis and help companies on strategic and digital transformation. We have collaborative partners in FinTech (e.g., OFX), infrastructure (e.g., AWS), audit and financing. With the excellent achievements and relationship, I also became co-owner of one of my clients which is in laser technology.
I was President of CPA Australia Greater China Division in 2016, Corporate Sector Committee Chairman in 2010-2014, and I am currently Honorary Advisor to the Division and Committee member of its Global Professional Education Advisory Committee.
I am also a Specialist Advisor to Ministry of Finance, an Accounting Committee member of the Association for Promotion of Guangdong-HK-Macao Cooperation, and President of CSU Alumni HK Chapter. My satisfaction arises from developing graduates from Australia, China and HK to be professionals with the business mindset and integrity who in return contribute to the societies.
